The ABC 33/40 StormChaser is a state-of-the-art severe weather center on wheels. It is equipped with a live data feed from the ABC 33/40 Pinpoint Doppler Radar. It has a GPS system which, when combined with the radar, can display exactly where StormChaser is with respect to severe storms or tornadoes. As a safety measure, this data is constantly relayed back to the station so that everyone knows where the StormChaser is at all times. In addition, StormChaser has a full Texas Instruments Weather Station mounted on it's roof. The data from these instruments is continuously fed to the station and can be displayed on-air in real time. It also comes loaded with a full suite of ham radio equipment.

ABC 33/40 was the first station in the state to use a StormChaser vehicle. The first vehicle was purchased in 1996. The current StormChaser was bought in 2000. Both have been used to bring ABC 33/40 viewers the most complete coverage of severe weather. The anemometer on StormChaser went through the fatal F4 tornado which struck Tuscaloosa in December, 2000. It recorded a wind gust of 117 miles-per-hour. It was also on the scene of the tragic F5 tornado which struck western Jefferson County in 1998. StormChaser was also in the thick of things in Walker County when two F3 tornadoes struck Carbon Hill in 2002.

Finally, StormChaser has seen plenty of severe weather duty along the Alabama coastline. It was there to greet Hurricane Danny, Hurricane Ivan and Hurricane Dennis, as well as Hurricane Katrina. StormChaser is one more reason ABC 33/40 is the station to turn to for severe weather coverage.
